Enroll in Cosmetology School
The first step in earning your cosmetology license is to enroll in school. You need to be at least 17-years-old and have a high school diploma or GED. You will need to complete both written and practical coursework. The time it takes to complete cosmetology school can vary greatly.
However, if you attend school full-time, then you will likely be able to complete the program in one year or less. You will have to put in long hours at school. Not only will you have to learn about hair care, nail care and skin care, but you will also learn about anatomy and physiology.
Pass the Exam
Once you have completed the necessary coursework, you will need to pass the examination. You will need to pass a written and practical examination. You will have to pay a fee to take the exam. After you have to pass the exam, you will need to apply for your license. In most cases, you can get your license within 5 to 10 days of applying for it.
Start Looking for a Job
You can start looking for a job after you have your license. There are several places that you can look for a job. You can apply in a beauty salon, day spa and retail beauty supply store. Many cosmetologists are also self-employed and have their own business.
Getting a job as a cosmetologist is the same as getting any other type of job. You will need to put together a resume, make phone calls and go to interviews. It is a good idea to follow up after an interview. You will be more likely to get a job if you have connections. That is why you need to stay in touch with your teachers and classmates.
Getting Your License Renewed
You will have to keep your license current. In order to renew your license, your current one must be in good standing. This means that you should not have any disciplinary action taken against you. In order to renew your license must take continuing education courses. The number of hours you have to take depend on your state. You will also have to pay a fee to renew your license.
